Houston Whiteside Historic District

The Houston Whiteside Historic District is one of the original neighborhoods in Hutchinson, Kansas and was home to some of Hutchinson’s most prominent citizens.  Because it was considered to be the location of the most well-off residents, it was nicknamed the “Silk Stocking District”.  The neighborhood is located within the boundaries of the Burlington Northern Rail Road tracks on the North, Avenue B on the South, Elm Street to the West and Pershing Street to the East.  The district was listed in the National Register in 2004, and is named after Houston Whiteside, who lived in the Houston Whiteside House located at 504 E Sherman.

A large number of beautiful homes remain, many of which have been restored.  There is a

strong sense of community, with annual events such as a neighborhood picnic each summer.  Please come visit our neighborhood.
